We don’t always notice it, but a lot of our spending comes from habits, not just needs.
Sometimes it’s adding something to cart because it’s on sale, or checking out just to "reward" ourselves. That’s okay now and then — but if you’re like me and want to save more, here are five small habits that helped me become a smarter, more mindful shopper.
1. Don’t Check Out Immediately
I used to buy right away when I saw a sale. Now, I leave items in my cart for at least 24 hours. Most of the time, I realize I don’t really need them, and if I do, the discount is often still there.
2. Always Compare Before You Buy
If you’re buying something above ₱500, compare brands or sellers first. Sometimes, you’ll find the same item ₱100–₱200 cheaper, or with better reviews.
3. Use Vouchers and Cashback
I used to skip this part — too lazy to tap around. But now, I always check for free shipping, store vouchers, or cashback offers before checkout. That’s money you get back for doing almost nothing.
4. Schedule Purchases (When You Can)
If it’s not urgent, wait for monthly sales or big events like 6.6, 11.11, etc. Even basic things like toothpaste or tissue are cheaper in bulk during these times.
5. Keep a “Wants” List
Instead of buying right away, I keep a “Wants” list in my notes app. If I still want the item after a few weeks, and it fits my budget, I go for it. This helped me stop a lot of impulse buys.
Start Small, Stay Consistent
These habits may sound simple, but they helped me save over ₱7,000 in one year, just by spending more intentionally. If you're starting your own journey toward better spending, I hope this helps.
